Structure of County Championship 2024

A two-division structure is used in county cricket where 10 counties play in Division One and eight in Division Two. The league is contested on a round-robin basis where each team plays twice against the teams in their respective division. Counties score 16 points for a win, 8 for a tie and 5 points for a draw. Earlier, 8 points were awarded for every draw but it was reduced to 5 following the 2023 season. Bonus points are also awarded for scoring runs and taking wickets. The championship is awarded to the team that is top of the league at the end of the season. Two teams are promoted and two teams are relegated in each season of county cricket.

History of County Championship

At least four possible dates have been given for the start of county cricket in England. The earliest references began in 1825. 1864 was the year when the competition was recognised in the publications and eight counties have come to be regarded as first-class from that date, including Cambridgeshire, who dropped out after 1871. As the popularity of organised cricket grew throughout England, more county clubs came into contention and, by the mid-1860s. In the 1870s, a significant development emerged in the realm of newspapers: the inclusion of tables featuring inter-county results. This innovative practice allowed readers to access information about various county-level competitions and sports events. With these tables, newspapers provided a comprehensive overview of the outcomes of different matches and proclaimed the league winners with their chosen criteria. The first-ever official cricket County Championship match began on 12 May 1890: Yorkshire beat Gloucestershire by eight wickets at Bristol.
