About Mzansi Super League
Introduced by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in 2018, it emerged as a replacement for the unsuccessful T20 Global League. Regrettably, despite its potential, the Mzansi Super League only saw two successful editions before it was discontinued. In its place, the SA20 competition took over from the 2022/23 season onward.

Structure of Mzansi Super League
In the league phase of the competition, every team engaged in a comprehensive home-and-away round-robin format, facing each other twice. Four points were awarded for wins, two points for no result matches and there was also a possibility of earning bonus points through bigger margins of victory. Once this stage concluded, the top three teams earned their passage to the playoffs. The team that secured the highest position in the league standings gained a significant advantage, as they progressed to the final as the designated home side. Meanwhile, the second and third-placed teams in the league standings confronted each other in an intense play-off match. The stakes were high, with the victorious team from this play-off clash earning the right to advance to the final stage of the tournament.
History of Mzansi Super League
In November and December 2018, the inaugural edition of the tournament was held. Unfortunately, the planned 2022 edition of the Mzansi Super League had to be cancelled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Regrettably, the competition had a very brief existence, spanning only two seasons before coming to an end.

Cricket fans are familiar with the glitz and glamour of renowned T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Big Bash League (BBL). However, it’s time to turn the spotlight on one of the lesser-known but exciting T20 competitions in the cricket circuit – the Mzansi Super League.
Cape Town Blitz
The Cape Town Blitz made an impressive debut in the first edition of the Mzansi Super League, emerging as the runners-up. Led by Farhaan Berhardien, the team showcased a productive campaign, albeit faltering in the 2018 final. Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock stole the show and earned the title of Player of the Series in 2018. The team also boasted talents like Dawid Malan, Andile Phehlukwayo, Anrich Nortje, and Dale Steyn, adding depth to their roster.
Durban Heat
In stark contrast to the Cape Town Blitz, the Durban Heat struggled to find their footing in the Mzansi Super League. They finished at the bottom of the league in 2018, showing dismal performances. However, a marginal improvement in the following year saw them claim the fourth spot on the table. Initially captained by Albie Morkel, the team saw a change in leadership with Dane Vilas taking over. Despite their struggles, they had a strong lineup, featuring stars such as Rashid Khan, Hashim Amla, Alex Hales, David Miller, and Vernon Philander.
Jozi Stars
The Jozi Stars enjoyed a dream start, becoming the inaugural champions of the Mzansi Super League in 2018. With remarkable performances from Beuran Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen, they defeated Durban Heat by eight wickets in the final. However, their title defence in the subsequent year was a disappointment, as they finished at the bottom of the league table. Chris Gayle, Kagiso Rabada, Simon Harmer, and Dan Christian were among the other top players who featured for the Jozi Stars during their campaign.
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants showcased consistent performances in the Mzansi Super League. Finishing second in the 2019 league table, they were denied a place in the final by the Tshwane Spartans, who defeated them in the semis. Under the captaincy of J.J. Smuts in both seasons, the Giants had experienced squads that included Imran Tahir, Jason Roy, Ben Duckett, and Ryan ten Doeschate. In the 2018 edition, they secured a respectable fourth-place finish.
Paarl Rocks
Paarl Rocks emerged victorious in the final edition of the Mzansi Super League in 2019. Led by captain Faf du Plessis, the team clinched the title with a brilliant 77 by Henry Davids in the final against the Tshwane Spartans. In the previous season, they finished third in the league table, but an abandoned semi-final match saw Jozi Stars progress to the final. Other notable players in the Paarl Rocks lineup were Dwayne Bravo, Tabraiz Shamsi, and David Wiese.
Tshwane Spartans
The Tshwane Spartans experienced mixed fortunes in the Mzansi Super League. In the 2019 edition, they reached the final but were defeated by Paarl Rocks. Led by AB De Villiers, the team showcased a productive campaign, supported by key players like Eoin Morgan, Rory Kleinveldt, Dean Elgar, and Rilee Rossouw. In the 2018 season, the Spartans finished in fifth place, struggling to make a significant impact.
