About Plunket Shield

It is one of the country’s oldest and most challenging sporting events. Spanning four days, it features intense cricket matches at venues nationwide, serving as a breeding ground for future Test BLACKCAPS players. The public enjoys free entry to witness this red-ball spectacle where Central Districts currently hold the title. Auckland holds the record for the most successful team, having clinched the championship 24 times since the 2009–10 season, during which the tournament reverted to its original name, the Plunket Shield.

Structure of Plunket Shield

The Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s domestic first-class cricket championship, comprises 4-day matches in an eight-round competition. The team with the most points after the final round is crowned champion. Since the 2018/19 season, the cricket tournament was shortened to eight rounds, resulting in not all teams playing each other home and away.

Points are awarded at the end of each match. The champion is determined solely based on points, as there is no final match. Teams earn 12 points for a win, 6 points for a tie, and 2 points for an abandoned or drawn one-inning match. No points are awarded for a loss or draw. If a match begins with 10 hours or less playing time remaining and results in a win or tie, the victorious team gets 6 or 3 points, respectively.

Additionally, teams accumulate batting and bowling points in the first innings only, up to 110 overs. Batting points are earned at 200, 250, 300, and 350 runs, while bowling points are awarded at 3, 5, 7, and 9 wickets taken.

History of Plunket Shield

The Plunket Shield competition originated in October 1906, thanks to the donation of a shield by William Plunket, the 5th Baron Plunket and former Governor-General of New Zealand (1904 to 1910). Initially, from the 1907–08 season, the championship was determined through challenge matches among Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, and occasionally Hawke’s Bay. Hawke’s Bay played twice in the Plunket Shield, in the 1914/15 and 1920/21 seasons, losing both matches.

In 1912, there was a suggestion to change the format to an inter-provincial tournament instead of the challenge system, but it was deemed unworkable at that time. However, in the 1921–22 season, a new approach was adopted where the four main teams (excluding Hawke’s Bay, which lost its first-class status) engaged in a single round-robin series of matches.

Subsequently, Central Districts joined the competition in 1950–51, and Northern Districts followed suit in 1956–57, contributing to the expansion and development of the prestigious Plunket Shield competition.

Plunket Shield Teams

The Plunket Shield, a prestigious New Zealand domestic first-class cricket championship, comprises six competing teams:

Auckland

Representing the Auckland region, the Auckland cricket team is one of New Zealand’s most successful sides, securing 24 Plunket Shield titles since 1921. Administered by the Auckland Cricket Association, they play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval.

Wellington

The Wellington Firebirds, based in Wellington, form one of the six New Zealand men’s first-class cricket teams. With 21 title victories, they are a formidable contender in the Plunket Shield.

Canterbury

Canterbury, hailing from Canterbury, New Zealand, is among the six teams competing in senior New Zealand Cricket events. They have been the second most successful domestic team in New Zealand history, boasting 20 title wins in the tournament’s history. Additionally, they participate in The Ford Trophy and the Men’s Super Smash as the Canterbury Kings.

Otago

Known as the Volts since 1997–98, the Otago cricket team has been part of New Zealand’s representative cricket since 1864. Representing the Otago, Southland, and North Otago regions in the South Island, they primarily play home games at the University Oval in Dunedin. Occasionally, they also play matches at the Events Centre in Queenstown, Queen’s Park Ground in Invercargill, and Molyneux Park in Alexandra.

Central Districts

The current defending champions, Central Districts, are based in central New Zealand and represent the men’s side of the Central Districts Cricket Association.

Northern Districts

The Northern Districts men’s cricket team, excluding Auckland, represents the northern half of New Zealand’s North Island. Although the least successful team in the league, they have clinched the championship eight times.
