About Ranji Trophy
In addition to the regional cricket boards of various states, government teams also take part in the tournament, like the Railways team, and several other teams associated with government enterprises. It has gained a similar popularity to that of County Cricket, prevalent in England. Moreover, Ranji Trophy acts as a platform for scouting various budding cricketers across the landmass. It was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in 1934 and is organised every year across numerous grounds and stadiums across India. Ranji Trophy 2023/24 will commence from January 4, 2024.

Structure of Ranji Trophy
The BCCI introduced a fresh format for the competition for more competitiveness in the 2022/23 season. According to it, the participating 38 teams are divided into five groups. There are four Elite Groups, each consisting of eight teams. Then comes the Plate Group which will have six teams in it. The teams will engage in round-robin fixtures in a home-away format. The top two of each Elite Group will move on to the quarter finals. The bottom two will feature in a playoff for fifth and sixth, while there will be another playoff for third and fourth. The two Plate finalists will be promoted to the Elite group for the next season whereas the bottom two teams, factoring in their points & run quotient, will be relegated.
History of Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy was founded under the name of Ranjitsinhji, one of India’s first Test cricketers. Ranjitsinhji played for England and Sussex. The proposal of a first-class cricket championship was raised by BCCI’s founder AS De Mello. Initially known as ‘The cricket championship of India’, the tournament was later renamed to Ranji Trophy in memory of Ranjitsinhji, one of India’s first Test cricketers who played for England and Sussex. The trophy was donated by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala in memory of Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, Jam Sahib of Nawanagar who had died the previous year. The first match of the competition was held on November 4, 1934 between Madras and Mysore at the Chepauk Stadium.
